Flight Safety Engineer

Arbetsbeskrivning

Andøya Space is a leading European provider of launch services for sounding rockets, launch vehicles, and satellites.

The Quantitative Risk Team within the Quality, Safety and Security Department is seeking a Flight Safety Engineer to support our growing portfolio of scientific and defense-related missions. The team is responsible for performing flight simulations and risk analyses for sounding rocket launches and defense test activities, ensuring all operations are conducted within established safety requirements.

As a Flight Safety Engineer, you will work closely with customers, project managers, launch officers, and other technical specialists to support operational missions through advanced modelling, simulation, and risk assessment. The role also includes supporting the setup and verification of safety-critical monitoring systems and maintaining documentation related to analytical methods, models, and processes.

We are looking for candidates with experience in simulation and statistical analysis within a relevant technical field. Experience in flight dynamics, flight simulation, or launch range safety is considered highly advantageous.

The position entails strict requirements regarding security suitability, and must be able to obtain security clearance level HEMMELIG / NATO SECRET according to the Norwegian Security Act.

Application deadline: August 3

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform simulations of ballistic rocket flights, including failure and explosion scenarios
  • Conduct risk analyses to demonstrate compliance with applicable safety criteria and regulations
  • Develop and maintain analysis software, calculation modules, and technical tools
  • Perform fault tree and event tree analyses
  • Prepare technical reports, assessments, and documentation
  • Support the setup, testing, and verification of safety monitoring systems
  • Develop, validate, and document analytical methods and theoretical models

Qualifications

  • MSc degree or equivalent in Physics, Mathematics, Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Cybernetics, or a related field
  • Solid understanding of geometry, including vector algebra, coordinate transformations, GIS, and map projections
  • Knowledge of numerical methods, statistics, and combinatorics
  • Experience with simulation, modelling, and data analysis
  • Proficiency in at least one programming or scripting language, preferably Python and/or C++
  • Familiarity with safety standards and regulatory frameworks from a relevant industry is an advantage

Personal Qualities

Flight safety analysis is a critical component of complex projects with demanding timelines and stringent safety requirements. We are therefore looking for a candidate who takes ownership of their work, demonstrates confidence in analytical results, and effectively communicates solutions and recommendations to project stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will also:

  • Be structured, organized, and detail-oriented
  • Demonstrate initiative and creativity when addressing technical challenges
  • Foster collaboration and contribute positively in multidisciplinary teams
  • Translate complex theoretical concepts into practical and operational solutions
  • Communicate technical findings clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Enjoy sharing knowledge and supporting the development of colleagues

What We Offer

We offer a unique opportunity to work on a diverse range of challenging launch projects in an international, highly specialized environment unlike any other.

Our benefits package includes:

  • Competitive salary based on qualifications and experience
  • Collective pension and insurance schemes
  • Eligibility for the AFP early retirement scheme
  • Flexible working hours
  • A variety of employee welfare and recreational benefits

The position is primarily based at our headquarters on Andøya, where scientific rocket launches and defense-related missions are conducted. Given the close connection between this role and operational activities, regular presence at Andøya is expected. However, we also maintain offices in Bodø and Oslo, and a hybrid working arrangement may be considered for the right candidate.

Please note that the position involves some travel and occasional work outside standard office hours during launch campaigns and operational activities.
